  • CUNY-CREST HIRES : High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Science and Technology. HIRES is part of the Consortium of the Science Research Mentoring Programs (studentresearchnyc.org) funded by the Pinkerton Foundation. HIRES focuses on STEM education which is an increasingly important part of the today’s workforce and economy. HIRES provides and encourages high-quality science and technology activities and initiatives in after-school programs.

  • NYC-LSAMP : The NYC Louis Stokes Alliance is an alliance of 17 CUNY Colleges and the CUNY Graduate Center. The Alliance goal is to substantially increase the number of underrepresented minority students who pursue and graduate with Baccalaureate Degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). From its inception in November 1992, the Alliance has been at the forefront of a concerted effort to increase annual minority STEM enrollment and graduation in the City University of New York. The Alliance provides academic scholarship support to CUNY students majoring in the STEM disciplines, making research an integral part of STEM education in New York City.

  • NASA NYCRI : Teams of high school and undergraduate students and faculty work along side graduate students and the principal investigators (lead scientists) of NASA-funded research projects at universities within a 50-mile radius of New York City (NY, NJ and CT); or at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) under the mentorship of a GISS scientist. Summer enrichment experiences include content and research seminars, visits to various research laboratories and informal education institutions, participation in local and national research summits and a final research summit with participants from other government agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the United States Department of Defense (DoD).

  • NSF REU Program: The National Science Foundation REU Site: Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Satellite and Ground- Based Remote Sensing at NOAA-CREST: Expanded Opportunities Grant (AGS#1560050) was awarded to New York City College of Technology under the directorship of Dr. Reginald Blake (PI), Dr. Janet Liou-Mark (co-PI), and Ms. Laura Yuen-Lau (project manager). This project seeks to provide undergraduates from community and senior colleges an opportunity to conduct full-time, collaborative satellite and ground-based remote sensing research with faculty mentors from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (NOAA-CREST) consortium. Ten STEM students are recruited from the City University of New York’s (CUNY) 23 campus wide institutions. For nine weeks in the summer and once a week during the fall and spring semesters, these students become part of a community of research scholars who are actively engaged in state-of- the-art remote sensing research and applications. They conduct research with multi- layered, multi-platformed applications of satellite and ground-based remote sensing to the cryosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. They also participate in research group meetings, seminars, and oral and poster presentations at local, regional, and national conferences; some students have even sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to conduct in situ remote sensing research and Saharan Dust Plume studies. The expectations through these unique and innovate endeavors are that many underrepresented minority students who would otherwise not pursue STEM education altogether or would not pursue STEM education through to the bachelor’s degree and graduate school level will now choose to follow the STEM corridor to either graduate education or to careers in STEM, particularly in the geosciences.
