IR Emissivity Dataset

Introduction

The Infrared Emissivity dataset (IREMISS) is a fixed data product specifying the surface infrared emissivity in the water vapor "window" at a wavelength of about 10.5 micrometer. The emissivities are specified by surface type category. The primary input for this dataset is a survey of values retrieved as part of the MODIS land surface temperature product at 5 km intervals. Two years of twice-daily data were used (2003, 2007); all values were compiled using the leading category in the collocated 0.25 degree SRFTYP product (about 90% of 0.25 degree grid cells contain only one type). The mean values are used with some minor adjustments; typical standard deviations about the mean values, indicating both the 'within type' and time variability are generally < 0.006 (see more details in the documentation).
