New York, NY, December 29, 2017– The (Bachelor of Engineering program in) Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering (ESE) at The City College of New York earns its second six-year certification in 2017 by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The ESE was granted its first accreditation in 2010 by the board’s Engineering Accreditation Commission. Dr. Marco J. Castaldi, director of ESE, says accreditation is essential:
“The accreditation is the stamp of approval that our program, after rigorous scrutiny, meets the standards required to prepare our students for the real engineering world.”
The voluntary peer-reviewed process assures that the ESE program meets high quality standards that produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation, emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public. For students, the accreditation carries weight in the working world since employers worldwide trust the ABET standard.
“The continuation of this designation as an accredited academic program means that prospective, current and graduated students can be confident that their training is top quality," said Dr. Liubov Kreminska who is administrative director of ESE.
ESE is one of 3,852 ABET-accredited programs at 776 colleges and universities in 31 countries. There are currently 95 ESE students pursuing degrees at City College of New York, including 5 ESE students funded by NOAA CREST fellowships. The next Comprehensive Review by ABET is scheduled for 2022-2023.
“This could not happen without our dedicated faculty. From those that offer courses to ESE students to those faculty who actively participated in the ABET report writing, meeting with the ABET visitors, advising of students and generally support our efforts,” said Castaldi.
